Baseball Camp

As part of their move to the US the boys have taken to American sports. They still love their soccer but they are also partial to some American football and baseball. Part of the fun of long summer holidays is going along to various sporting camps and their first of the summer was a baseball camp.

It was based at Robinswood park, not far from home, and they loved it! The final day of the camp was on July 4th which meant that I could go along and see whether they really were both as good as they told me they were!

As it turns out they were pretty good! I would say they are natural sports stars but then I guess I am a bit biased! Here is Toby running home from third base to give his team the lead:

Here’s Harry making the same run – from second to third base:

The game they played, with both on the same team, ended as a draw. There were some great contributions from both. This first clip is Toby on strike with his brother on third base. Could Toby hit it and get his brother round for the run??

We’re not sure what the next camp will be yet but baseball was a definite hit, in more ways than one!

Soaring

It’s been a while since we had some eagle photos but now they are back! As Tracy and I did some American style gardening i.e. get the strimmer out and strim everything that moves, we saw an eagle swooping about. Having stood watching it for a while Tracy told me to go and get my camera. With large lens secured the eagle promptly disappeared!

Just as I was about to put the camera away, the eagle decided it wanted its photo taken so it gave a screech from the tree it was sat on top! I zoomed in as far as I could and here’s the result. Not a bad shot and hopefully the first of many wildlife pictures this summer, with a bear top of the list!!

Cama Beach

A week after school finished Tracy, Harry and Toby went off on an adventure for the night to Cama beach. It was arranged months ago, possibly even a year ago, by the mum of one of Toby’s friends. Cama Beach is a very popular destination on Cama Island. This state park is full of 60 year old cabins and from what Tracy says they haven’t changed much since they were put in place.

I can’t say much about the trip because I wasn’t there but the main points are as follows:

1. The cabin smelt like the Crab Pot i.e. fishy!
2. When the tide came in it was right up to the front door and driftwood floated past their front door
3. There was a sweet shop that Harry and Toby kept buying 25 cent sweets from
4. Tracy was mostly anti-social, sitting in her chair in the middle of the beach reading her book!
5. The boys were swimming in the water until about 10pm at night
6. Toby’s friend Ian had a mood when they got there and had an afternoon sleep for 3 months
7. They bought enough hubba bubba bubble gum to sink a ship

But mostly they had an”epic” time! Maybe I will get to go there next time but we will need to book well in advance as it is very popular! All photo’s are provided by Tracy:

School End

Another school year has flown by! Back in September here are the boys about to set off for the first day of school – Harry into 4th Grade and Toby into Kindergarten – his first year at school:

IMG_2646

Many months later it was there last day at school. Accents were more American, confidence is definitely increasing, shyness is disappearing and the two boys are growing. Here they are on their last day of the school year:

Harry is coincidentally wearing the exact same pair of jeans. In the picture above they were rolled up but no longer at the end of the year. Bigger and naughtier!

Sea Stars!

I’m not quite sure where Tracy had picked up this gem of information however she had and as a result we woke up on a sunny Saturday morning and decided to head over to Alki Beach. The reason for this trip was because this weekend was going to be the lowest tides of the year and all the creatures of the deep would be available for us to see, prod and poke!

This was meant to be particularly interesting for Toby as he had been learning all about the creatures in the Puget Sound over the last few weeks of school, including an enjoyable trip to the Seattle aquarium. With low tide due at 10:30am, we had breakfast, got dressed, hoovered the insides of the wellington boots in case they were full of spiders, and then set off to the beach.

Although it was still early when we got over there (relatively speaking) Alki was already busy. It’s a lovely place to go but it really does get busy over there and that probably stops us from going there more often. The good thing was that not everybody had the same insight as Tracy and they had all positioned themselves on the beach with the great views of Seattle. If they had gone round the corner and over to the western side they would have seen much more exciting things!

We parked the car, put our spider free boots on and went down onto the beach. It was an absolutely beautiful morning which was improved still further by the sight of Washington ferries whizzing around the islands – Tracy was happy!

20130622_094220

There weren’t many people there to begin with so we had the beach almost to ourselves. As we worked our way to the rocky areas near the waters edge we began to see a few creatures lurking under the seaweed:

20130622_095242

This next one, according to the rangers from the Seattle aquarium who were out telling people what everything was, is a mother and baby starfish, or sea star as they call them over here. It was very exciting seeing our first few sea stars but then soon we could see them everywhere! There literally were hundreds of them, and as the beach got busier across the morning, I dread to think how many were squashed!

20130622_100010

We also spotted a sea cucumber:

20130622_105150

The interesting fact about the sea cucumber is that when it is scared it “pukes its guts up” and shoots it at the thing that it is scared off. It then goes hungry for a couple of weeks as it grows its guts back! It literally does puke its guts up and not just the contents of its guts!

Toby was keen, after his trip to the aquarium to see a moon snail. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the snail but we did get to see the eggs that one had laid:

20130622_102522

The smooth grey thing is a mix of hundreds of thousands of moon snail eggs, sand and snail mucus! The round area in the middle of that “thing” is where the snail shell was – they grow to about the size of a softball. Throughout our time down there the aquarium rangers were telling us all these interesting facts, which made it much more fun as we would have had no clue otherwise! The boys were particularly surprising to Tracy and I as they spent all their time going up to the rangers, asking questions and asking what things were. They are definitely more confident and talkative than they were!

I spotted this next thing but I can’t remember exactly what it was called though. It’s basically a snail without a shell (aka a slug) and it’s called something like the nude snail:

20130622_104605

This next creature, is called a Kiton, and I think Harry spotted this one. If you can’t see it take a look by the green seaweed:20130622_105418

This creature dates back to when the dinosaurs roamed the planet. I’m not sure that this one was actually alive then but others definitely were. In amongst all the excitement of finding these creatures we also saw an osprey flying about and then swoop down to catch a fish. Unfortunately I was so engrossed in the sea creatures that I didn’t see it dive but I did hear the splash and see it fly off with a fish. It was all happening!!

Another common site was the red rock crab:

20130622_111132

This particular crab was a whopper. The interesting fact we learnt about crabs is that if they have black ends to their claws then you should be careful because that means they have extra strong claws and will break your fingers if they are about! Non black tipped claws are not so strong.

During all this time we had to be very careful not to step on the sea stars. The most common variety around was the purple sea star which is the name of the purple and orange sea stars! This particular species has slightly tougher skin and they can survive longer out of the water. The other variety we saw was the sun star which has more legs than your regular sea star. These have softer skin and cannot last as long out of the water. They can grow up to three feet wide but we didn’t see any of those. We did see this one though which we moved into the water.

20130622_111852

Harry also moved a smaller one into the water but not that delicately – he took it down to the waters edge and then dropped it into the sea! Poor thing! I’m sure it survived though. After a few hours nosing about and seeing other things like shrimp, different types of crabs, small boys (not ours) falling in the water, gunnal (which is something like an eel), Christmas anemones, anemones eating jellyfish, jellyfish, the guts of a sun star (they also puke them up!) and then a small dead sea otter it was time to go (lots more pictures are here).

A very entertaining and educational morning had left us hot and hungry so we were straight off from the beach to a restaurant! Tough life!!

Father’s Day

It was father’s day and I woke to two little boys whispering away in their bedroom. After a while, coffee arrived by the bed courtesy of Tracy and then two lovely little boys arrived with gifts. I was very lucky and got some shorts, a shirt, a new pillow, some Utah books and maps and lots of cards and drawings as well as a big chocolate cake!

One particular drawing/piece of writing from Toby was very enlightening. He had completed it at school and it was a list of “the top 10 things about my Dad” and it went a bit like this (spelling by Toby!):

10 – gets mony

9 – ride bicks

8 – tichly manster

7 – smart

6 – fun

5 – plays games with us

4 – taks me to soccer

3 – (blank)

2 – pichs me up at the bus stop

1 – coks!

A pretty impressive list, even if he couldn’t think of anything for the #3 slot!

Poetry Morning

It’s nearly the end of the school year and to round it off we went into to Toby’s class this week to see him and his friends reciting poems. Toby was involved in four of them and here they are.

Poem 1 was Gulp, Gulp and was performed by Toby, Adarsh, Paul and Rune:

Poem 3 was Chubby Little Snowman and was meant to be performed by Toby, Jack and Paul but Jack was scared and sat with his mum.

Baseball

A year and one week after our last trip to Safeco Fields (yes I am writing this a bit late!) it was time to go back and see our next match. This time we were here to see the Mariners take on the LA Angels in the third of their 4 games. Mariners had won the first and then been beaten in the second the night before. We had bought the cheapest tickets we could find in the bleachers seats but we had a plan! If you buy the cheapest tickets and get their early enough you just go and sit in the “hit it here” cafe and you get a better view plus food it delivered to your table!

We also had to get their early because it was Dustin Ackley bat night which meant that all kids got a free baseball bat signed by Dustin Ackley which both boys thought was very cool! So with our bats secured, we sat at our table and started eating and drinking!

Toby struck his usual pose for photographs:

20130427_173000

And the game began with King Felix pitching first:

20130427_180901

After plenty of food and drink we decided it was time to leave the cafe and head towards the seats we’d actually paid for and enjoy the final two innings of the game – which the Mariners were losing 2-0. On the way to our seats the boys had their photo taken with a statue of a former Mariners game announcer who is very famous but whose name escapes me!

20130427_195933

20130427_195945

Once in our seats the roof had to be closed again as the rain clouds started to close in. The Mariners were obviously inspired by the rain as the hit back to score three runs and win the game:

20130427_202926

This was the hit for the third and winning run – it was pot luck that I happened to take this particular picture!

20130427_201432

So with the win in the bag all that was left was for Toby to strike the winning pose and end the evening as he started it!20130427_205014

Go Mariners! We will try not to wait another year before we go again!

Birthday

It was that time of the year again – the most important birthday in the house! Unfortunately Toby didn’t realize the importance of his mothers birthday and he had soccer try-outs scheduled for the Friday night before and midday on Tracy’s birthday.

The birthday morning started with breakfast in bed which was a bit stressful because I had to make it and Tracy had requested poach eggs and I’d never cooked them before! With a bit of flooping about some muffins were toasted, eggs poached and hollandaise made and surprisingly enough it didn’t taste disgusting!

After breakfast was tidied away, we got Toby ready for stage two of the try-outs and I packed the bag for our overnight stay at Suncadia – a resort up in the mountains. I probably shouldn’t pack again because we had a very full bag for one night away – including about 3 pairs of trousers each for Toby and Harry, 3 pairs of jeans which Tracy had just left on the bed to be put away rather than be packed plus a variety of other things that weren’t really required!

Anyway, the car was loaded and off we went up to the Highlands for soccer. Luckily the rain held off and Toby had fun charging about and bossing his potential team mates around! With a few minutes left of try-outs Tracy walked up to Zeeks and got a take-out pizza for the drive up to Suncadia. We collected Tracy, started scoffing pepperoni and drove up the mountains to the East.

We arrived at Suncadia at about 3pm and checked in. We had a nice suite in a lodge which was slightly separate to the main area and after unpacking all the clothes that we didn’t really need we went back to the bar with a view and relaxed with a nice bottle of wine and admired the very nice view.

After demolishing the wine we went back to our room via the driving range where the boys filled their pockets with golf balls.

2013-04-21 15.56.56

2013-04-21 15.57.20

Back in the suite it was time for the boys to enjoy the deep, round bath – which provided allsorts of enjoyment apart from the moment where Toby slipped and Harry ended up with his butt in his face!

Once we were all clean we went back to the main area and had a lovely meal. I can’r remember exactly what we ate (mainly due to lots more beer and birthday wine) but I know there was a nice steak in there somewhere and maybe some salmon. As an added bonus the waiter apologized that the food had taken a long time to be served (it wasn’t that bad) and they knocked all the drink off the final bill – that saved us some money!

Then it was back to the room, where Harry and Toby had a couple of the birthday cupcakes that had been delivered and then we all crashed into bed, exhausted from our very busy day and the excitement of a 42nd birthday!

The next morning we woke, slightly hazy, and decided to clear the head with a walk down the steep hill to the river in the valley floor. Apparently I had bet Harry $5 that he wouldn’t be able to throw a stone across the width of the river and so that is where we were heading with Harry smelling the dollars! He did very well with his efforts – much better than the birthday girl – but he couldn’t quite get a stone across to the other side.

He did nearly brain a few birds as they flew over the river but they just managed to avoid the flying stones. Having walked down the steep hill, we were all hungry and set off back up the hill. It was all very hot and sweaty walking back up but we made it in the end. We stopped at the cafe and got breakfast plus Toby got a cuddly toy – as he just doesn’t have enough of them already! Then it was into our swimmers and off to the spa/pool/slide area. The pool area was lovely with a nice warm indoor pool with slides plus an even warmer outdoor pool – which it needed to be because although the sun was out it was freezing! We spent lots of time in each with Toby doing very well with his swimming and trying to create his own whale impression. Unfortunately Toby’s impression involved him spitting lots of water up in the air and was not quite as impressive as Harry’s efforts in Mexico.

After a couple of hours in the pool it was clearly lunch time – we hadn’t eaten for at least 3 hours! Lunch was followed by pinching more golf balls and then with the afternoon relaxed away it was 6pm and time to check out. An hour later we were back home and the birthday weekend was over. It was fun though and I have a feeling we will be back to Suncadia again some time!

Tulips

It’s that time of the year again when the tulip fields of Skagit Valley are out and the Tulip festival is off and running. It was a bit tricky planning a trip up to see them in amongst all the holidays work trips as well as trying to coincide it with some sunshine.

Having studied the weather apps carefully it appeared that there would be in the region of 18 minutes of sunshine per hour between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday afternoon and so that was the plan! The car was loaded with wellingtons, coats and cameras and off we went. As we drove up the freeway, the skies were black and the rain was hammering down and I think Tracy was wondering why she wasn’t at home watching TV with a nice glass of wine in her hand! Fortunately though, the weather app was reasonably accurate – there was some sunshine along with some big muddles, lots of gloopy mud and millions of tulips.

There’s not much to say really, other than they looked lovely and I will be back again next year!

Hotel Barcelo

As well as watching wildlife and taking a city tour we also put some hard work in relaxing by the pool. Each morning we realized that Americans like to get their towels on a lounger even more than the Germans do. If you weren’t careful and spent too much time in bed in the morning all the best locations by the pool were gone! Fortunately Tracy is an expert at getting up and claiming what is rightfully hers so we managed to bag loungers by the pool bar and on the last morning in the pool:

20130411_073333

20130411_085050

Each morning began with plenty of breakfast, although the buffet style approach caused Tracy many problems as there was too much food and she couldn’t focus on what to eat. Fortunately about half way through our stay she managed to get her focus and structure her meals in a way that meant she didn’t spend 10 minutes walking around aimlessly!

After breakfast it was a covering in sun lotion and straight into the pool for the boys:

DSC02167

DSC02251

And once in position on a lounger that was our day pretty much taken care of! There were occasional dips in the pool, sitting at the pool bar having a drink, going for some lunch and listening to all sorts of 80’s music and annoying people but all in all it was very relaxing doing nothing in the lovely warm sunshine.

This was our apartment block – we were up on the top floor:

On the first night at the hotel after we’d been for dinner we went upstairs to the Premium Club area which we had access to and Toby decided he was hungry! He’d already had pasta, fruit, cakes and then a second plate of pasta (yes, in that order) but that clearly wasn’t enough – melt in your mouth steak, with some Egyptian dance moves thrown in were required:

20130407_211133

We also went to a nice Japanese restaurant while we were there and enjoyed more lovely food. For this meal we had to sit on the floor and our legs then went down under the table. It was very comfortable but it must be said that Tracy did have issues getting up which, if you click the link to the photo’s below you will see one of her being hauled up by Harry and Toby!

20130408_183302

And that was that. Just a quite few days relaxing by the pool. None of us had been to Mexico before so we can cross that off our list and I think there is a chance we may be back – it’s definitely a good place to go to get some sunshine while the cloud and rain is around in the Pacific North West!
