Match Attax

The excitement of Match Attax returned to the house tonight. The last time we had this type of excitement was when Grandad was here back in October and we had a box full of cards to open. Today some more cards arrived from Nanny and GanGan and after lots of waiting the time came to open 10 packs each. It didn’t take long but they didn’t half enjoy themselves!

Present!

I was a bit naughty today and bought myself a present! As I’d had a a good week at work (a promotion, two bonuses, a pay rise and some shares) Tracy convinced me that it was ok! I didn’t need much convincing! I’d had my eye on getting a new body for a few weeks – a camera body – and yesterday at the mall I almost gave in to temptation. Luckily I hadn’t because this morning we went to Costco to get a joint of pork and we ended up with a new camera!!

It would have been silly not too really – it was such a good deal. I got a Canon Rebel T2i with two lenses, a bag and a memory card for not much more than the camera shop wanted for just the body. Good job Costco!

So we should now see a considerable improvement in the quality of photo’s on this site now, starting with this:

Which is not really anything special but I had to take a photo of something! The very first photo ever taken on the camera was the featured image at the top of this page. It made Tracy look even more beautiful than normal!

Guess Who?

A competition for you all. It’s quite simple, who is the star of the following video? There’s no visual clues just some noise. Could it be me? To be honest I don’t make these sort of noises so I doubt it! It could be Harry, it could be Tracy or maybe it’s Toby. What do you think?

Correct answers get a prize. Not sure what but it will be good!

Bellevue Globetrotters

After sneaking away from work a little bit earlier than normal we decided to visit the 41.5 park and shoot a few hoops. We started out somewhat rustily (aka rubbish) but slowly improved. Harry soon rediscovered his mojo and scored some baskets, including a spectacular over the head effort, and Toby scored a hat-trick of baskets. Toby also learnt a new “pass under the leg” move to add to his dribbling and basketball dance moves …

Jet Lag Watch

It’s time for another series of jet lag watch. The summer series saw Aunty Arnold put in what we thought was a reasonable effort at overcoming jet lag. Then Grandad rocked up in the autumn series and put his daughter to shame! Now the winter watch series has begun and Aunty Arnold and Nanny are trying to put in a good shift against the power of jet lag.

They arrived on Tuesday – and powered through homeland security in no time at all – arriving at Hotel 17012 SE 40th Ct at about 6pm. The advantage of taking forever to get through security is that you have to stay awake. By arriving so quickly the first retirement to bed happened at 8:30pm! School girl error from Nanny – that was never going to work. So, at 8:30pm on Tuesday night Nanny went to bed. At 11:30pm on Tuesday night Nanny was awake! But before we laugh to much at that, let’s consider the performance of Aunty A. Now Aunty A is a seasoned traveler and has beaten pacific coast jet lag before. Aunty Arnold stayed up a little longer than Nanny but she finally gave in and went to bed at about 9:30pm on Tuesday night. At 10:30pm on Tuesday night she was awake. Hahaha! That really is rubbish! After some sleeping and waking, both gave in and woke up for the final time at about 3:30am – not the best of starts.

On Wednesday night they both managed to stay up a little later. I had been in LA for the day and had challenged them to stay up until I got back – at about 10:20pm. They both failed. Still with the benefit of some drugs and pills, the amount of sleep did improve slightly – and I think both managed to actually make it past midnight before waking up for the first time!

Thursday night. The worst night so far for Sally. Not really sure why – maybe just attention seeking!! Only joking! At least it was good for Nanny though – there was one wake up in the night but then she slept through until 6:30am. Which strengthens the thought that Sally was putting it on! Or maybe that the slightly older generation can handle jet lag better! But then again, Sally is a rubbish sleeper anyway so the jet lag probably has nothing to do with it.

If it’s any consolation, Tracy, Harry, Toby and I have been sleeping like absolute logs!

Bikes at the Park

Inbetween the hours of house tidying that was going on we thought we’d better get the children away from  the Wii, xBox, laptop, PSP, DS and other such electronic contraptions. With rain forecast for later we got the bikes into the boot of my car and went over to Robinswood Park.

With crash (ski) helmets on we set off round the park. Harry looked a bit big on his bike (and his jeans a bit small) and it took a few moments for his bike riding skills to come back. Fortunately riding a bike is just like riding a bike and he was disappearing into the distance before we knew it.

Toby set off with me trying to keep him upright with the support pole. He did pretty well, but would have probably done better if he focused more on cycling than ringing the bell.

After a brief stop to play in the playground we set off on the bikes again. Toby was obviously a bit more confident as I was having to run to keep up with him.

With the bikes back in the trunk, we went to Issaquah and got Harry a bargain new bike – we’re picking it up tomorrow – and because we were ravenous we got a yummy Subway for lunch. Once we’d eaten our $5 foot long subs it was back to the cleaning. And what a lovely clean house it is too. I particularly like swiffers!

Full Moon

It’s been a beautiful few days in Bellevue and just before the rain returns later this week we had a lovely pink sunset glow on the mountains with a full moon shining above. It was a very beautiful sight, which hopefully the following picture captures…

Winter Wonderland

Editors Note: the day references relate to when it was written not published. The lack of broadband delayed publishing.

Well what a week that was! The snow started last weekend with quite a lot of hype but no real action. We saw a little flurry in Bellevue on Saturday but Sunday was when it was really meant to start. We woke up and found some but not as much we hoped for but fast forward 24 hours and then we really saw the fun begin.

Monday was Martin Luther King Day so the children weren’t at school anyway so that wasn’t a problem but the snow on the hill from our house was enough to make me think I’d work from home. Admittedly I don’t need much encouragement but Seattle-ites are renowned for being particularly bad at driving in the snow so I figured it was safer!

The snow continued to fall all day although being the brave Brits we are we did manage to make a brief excursion to the Triple X Diner in Issaquah for lunch with its world famous root beer. It was a stereo-typical American diner and the food was good and burgers and cheese steaks were duly demolished!

As the snow continued to settle news came through from the Bellevue School District that school would start 2 hours late on Tuesday – Harry was pleased! On Tuesday morning I decided to venture out to work as the snow had pretty much gone over night – it was proving to be a fickle thing. At around 11am I was sat sitting looking out the window from the office and Seattle disappeared under a snow storm. As I watched (strategizing in my head not just being lazy), the snow storm could be seen coming across the lake at quite some speed. It then reached Bellevue and within a matter of minutes the city turned white with a layer of snow – it was quite impressive to watch.

This covering of Bellevue in snow caused widespread panic through the office and everyone got sent home! The strange thing was that once I had slipped and slid my way about 2 miles south of Bellevue there was no snow at all and everything was fine! Never mind – off home I went!

The snow did reach us eventually though and started to fall hard again. I wouldn’t normally have minded but I had a flight to catch in the morning and the volume of snow was clearly going to cause problems. On top of that I was starting to get a sore throat so I didn’t really want to go anywhere other than bed!

With the snow still falling we all went to bed at 8 o’clock which at the time felt like a good idea but it did mean I missed the fact that the flight was cancelled in the morning. I found that out when I woke in the morning and saw all the missed calls and text messages on my phone and the general chaos that seemed to have fallen across Western Washington. I think the people of Washington have a similar approach to snow as the UK – not very good! Although to be fair I think the amount of snow and ice that arrived across the week would probably have bought the UK to a grinding halt for about a month!

With my flight cancelled, I had been scheduled onto a later flight at 7:55pm so I spent the day in bed feeling rough and watching the havoc unfold on local news. When there are winter storms here the local news just continues all day with updates around everything that is happening! People where ski-ing down the streets of Seattle, skidding off the freeway into ditches and generally it was complete and utter chaos!

At about 3:30pm I decided to leave for the airport as I figured it was best to get there as soon as possible! The road down to West Sammamish Parkway wasn’t too bad but the i-90 was! As I arrived on the freeway the first thing I saw was a car pointing towards me. They’d clearly just finished spinning before turning around and heading off in the right direction again. As I slowly chugged along – never going more than 38 miles per hour – the giant american trucks just carried on hammering along the roads like there was nothing wrong at all! I kept well out of their way!

An hour later I arrived at the airport and I saw there was a slightly earlier flight to San Diego – 6:45pm rather than 7:55pm. I checked to see if there were any free seats and there were so I would be in San Diego by 9:20pm rather than 10:20pm which was good. Or it would have been if it happened!

At 7:00pm I was starting to worry that the 7:55pm flight was going to leave before the earlier one I had changed onto but then some good news came through – the 7:55pm flight was cancelled! At 7:30pm we started to board the plane and then we had to sit there and wait for it to be de-iced. Finally, at 9:20pm we took off. So a 10:20 arrival in San Diego had improved to a 9:20 arrival but then ended up being an 11:40pm arrival. I got a cab to the hotel to find out that my reservation had been cancelled but after telling me that they said it wasn’t a problem because they had a room for me! So at midnight I crashed into bed.

The next day was obviously non-stop work for me with regular check-ins to see how Tracy, the boys and Washington were coping. There had been the odd power outage but unlike large parts of Western Washington it came back on and stayed on. The phone and internet went though and we only got that back a week later. The power was going everywhere because the weight of the snow on the trees made them all fall over and they collapsed on the power lines. Fortunately we have someone in our close who works for Puget Sound Energy so even if we do lose power I think we get priority in getting it switched back on!

The other new phenomenon in Washington was ice rain. Tracy and I had laughed the day before as we found the whole concept of ice rain slightly ridiculous but not any more. The ice rain just fell from the sky and covered everything with an instant layer of ice. Tracy decided to move the car into the garage as this fell but despite leaving the car running for almost an hour the ice rain kept falling and the car windscreen refused to de-frost! In the end she drove blind into the garage and fortunately didn’t crash – I guess that’s what you can do when you get 98% in your driving test.

On Friday, Tracy ventured out to get some bread and then struggled to get the car back up the hill. The neighbors didn’t manage at all and had to get the snow chains out to get back up. Harry and Toby – still having snow days at home from school – went sledding down the road. Harry mastered the skill of falling of the sled before he reached the road at the bottom but Toby didn’t quite – Tracy had to dive on him to stop him – not that there was any traffic about.

In San Diego I was busy working in the sunshine. Poor me! Working and eating, watching dolphins leaping out the sea, humpback whales blowing water into the air through their spouts, watching sea lions and feeling very ill and quite sorry for myself! My flight for Seattle was delayed a touch coming home but we still left at 7:15 – the first and only flight of the day to Seattle – the rest had been cancelled.

I landed back in Seattle at about 9:45pm and set off of the final leg of the journey back home. The freeways had cleared quite well with the rain that had been falling but as I came off the freeways and tried to head on up SE 40th Street the snow and ice was still all over the road. I managed to make my way up as far as the basketball court before sliding back down. I thought I’d give it another go but despite the run up the batman car couldn’t make it and slid back down into some snow by the side of the road and got stuck! After rocking and skidding about for a while I managed to spin the car round and slide back down the hill where I left it for the night.

I trudged back up the hill and arrived to the sweet snores of home. Back in your own bed – you can’t beat it!

Let it Snow!

We had a little bit of snow yesterday morning when we were shopping in Bellevue but it had rained heavily first so nothing settled. Not today though! Today was much better. We woke to a light dusting and then we had some more across the morning. Then in the afternoon it started to come down properly. Even though we couldn’t see the lake and mountains any more the view was lovely.

It was proper crunchy snow too – perfect for snowballs (as the xbox found out!). Hopefully it will continue for a few more hours and then I’ll have to work from home!

And then some bonus pictures! It wasn’t easy to keep the camera steady as I was a bit squiffy but in the end with some improvisation I managed it!

Sunrise

There is another new year resolution that I would like to keep but I don’t suppose I will and that is to take a photo from our front door every day so that we have the whole year recorded. Completely without intention I have the first two days captured and the one today (January 2nd) is a lovely view. The sunrise this morning – just before 8am – was a beautiful pink sight. The pictures don’t really do it justice but they are not bad!

Fireworks!

There hasn’t been a firework post for a while now so New Years Eve/Day seems like a good time to have another. If we hadn’t all been suffering from jet-lag we may well have made it over to Seattle to watch the Space Needle fireworks however we were suffering and the New Years Eve schedule went along the lines of:

6:30pm Toby announces he wants to go to bed (without any tea!)
7:00pm Harry admits to being a little bit tired, which is almost unheard of, and he goes to bed
7:30pm Tracy and I go to bed

The fireworks did wake Tracy, Harry and I up at midnight but fortunately we all got back to sleep. Next year we will make it but for this year we will just have to be satisfied with someone else’s recording of the show:

Resolutions

I don’t for a moment think we’ll keep them for very long but our New Years resolutions are as follows:

1. Do more cooking – Neil
2. Stop talking like a baby – Harry
3. Keep my body fresh – Toby
4. Stop hitting, punching, kicking and biting – Toby
5. Stop getting told off for the same thing over and over again – Harry and Toby
6. Help mummy and daddy with cooking – Toby

Tracy hasn’t thought of any yet.
